EDITORS COMMENTS
On October 24, 1801, a significant archaeological discovery was made near the Casa del Fauno, or House of the Faun, in Pompeii. The find was a large and intricately detailed marble mosaic, depicting a battle scene between two armies on horseback in chariots, armed with lances. The mosaic, now known as the "Battle of Pompeii," was discovered during the excavations led by Spanish archaeologist Don Raffaele D'Amato, under the patronage of Pope Pius VII and Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany. The mosaic, which measures approximately 11.5 x 15 feet, is believed to have been created during the 2nd or 3rd century AD. It is thought to represent a battle between the armies of Margrave Boniface III of Canossa and Margravine Matilda of Tuscany, and Lord Pietro de' Lante Roman Senator Federico da Montefeltro, Lord of Urbino, and Duke Bonifacio Ducardi of Durazzo. The figures in the mosaic are depicted in detailed and colorful costumes, providing valuable insights into the fashion and military attire of the time. The discovery of the Battle of Pompeii mosaic was a major event in the history of archaeology and the study of ancient Roman culture. It was one of the most significant finds from Pompeii during the 19th century and is now considered a masterpiece of Roman art. The mosaic is currently on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy. This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Giulio Ferrario in his "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1837, provides a detailed and accurate representation of the Battle of Pompeii mosaic. The engraving captures the intricacy and detail of the original mosaic, allowing viewers to appreciate its beauty and historical significance.
