EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases three fascinating members of the weasel family: the marten (Marten martes), beech marten (Marten foina), and stoat or ermine (Mustela erminea). The central figure is the marten, a medium-sized, agile predator with a sleek, brown coat and distinctive bushy tail. Known for their excellent climbing abilities, martens are found throughout Europe and Asia, and are prized for their luxurious fur. To the left of the marten is the beech marten, a smaller relative with a lighter, reddish-brown coat and distinctive white spots on its face. The beech marten, also known as the pine marten, is native to Europe and is named for its preference for living in beech and pine forests. Its diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, and fruit. On the right side of the marten is the stoat or ermine, a small, slender predator with a distinctive white winter coat and black-tipped tail. In the winter, the stoat's fur turns completely white, making it an excellent camouflage in the snow. The stoat is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and is an opportunistic predator, feeding on a variety of prey including rodents, birds, and insects. This stunning lithograph not only showcases the physical characteristics of these three animals but also highlights their place in the natural world. The intricate details and lifelike depiction of the animals make this a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art.
