EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Méneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases a vibrant and intricate tableau of various natural wonders from the natural world. At the center of the image, an Oriole Blackbird (Gymnomystax mexicanus) sits proudly atop its nest, constructed from twigs and adorned with eggs. The female oriole can be seen nearby, her plumage a striking contrast of black and orange. Surrounding the oriole's nest, two Chocolate Loricarid Catfish (Loricaria cataphracta) glide gracefully through the water. These armored catfish, native to South America, are characterized by their distinctive armor-like scales and elongated dorsal and pectoral fins. Among the aquatic vegetation, a Pine Sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer) can be spotted. This small insect, with its distinctive yellow and black stripes, is a common pest of pine trees, laying its eggs in the needles which hatch into larvae that feed on the foliage. In the upper left corner of the image, a male and female Lophyre de Pin (most likely a species of pine cone beetle) can be seen, along with their larvae, coques (oviposition sites), and lorica (protective covering). The intricate details of their anatomy and behavior are captured with remarkable accuracy in this engraving. This stunning work of art not only showcases the beauty and diversity of the natural world but also serves as a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators of the 19th century.
