EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelms Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases three distinctive flatfish species: Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, 1), Flounder (Platichthys flesus, 2), and Dab (Limanda limanda, 3). The meticulous detail and vibrant colors of this artwork, produced by a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Wilhelm (1758-1811), who was also known as the German Buffon, highlight the intricacies of each fish's unique features. The Plaice, depicted on the left, is characterized by its mottled, brownish-gray coloration, with a distinctive black spot on its back. Its body is relatively large, with a flat, disc-shaped head and a small dorsal fin. The Flounder, in the middle, displays a more uniformly brownish coloration, with a white underbelly. Its eyes are located on the right side of its body, allowing it to blend in with the seafloor. The Dab, on the right, is easily identified by its speckled, grayish-brown body and a distinct black spot on its tail. This image is a testament to the artistry and dedication of Wilhelm, who dedicated his life to the study and documentation of the natural world. The encyclopedia, which contained over 1,000 plates, was a groundbreaking work in the field of ichthyology and marine biology, providing a comprehensive record of various fish species for generations to come.
