EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolithograph depicts Sir Thomas and Irene, a pair of Plymouth Rock chickens, proudly displayed as first and second place winners at the Birmingham exhibition of 1886. Bred by Mrs. Ainsworth, these birds were the epitome of Victorian poultry fancying, a hobby that had reached fever pitch during this era. The intricately detailed illustration, created by J.W. Ludlow and published by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, showcases the unique features of the Plymouth Rock breed. With their distinctive white bodies, black and white cresting, and vibrant plumage, these birds were considered exotic and prized for their ornamental value as much as for their utility as game birds. The image captures the essence of the poultry show scene, with the proud cock and hen displayed on a red velvet pad, their heads held high, and a gleaming prize cup in the foreground. The popularity of poultry shows and breeding during this time was fueled in part by the growing interest in ornithology and the desire to create new and improved varieties. However, it is important to note that the practice of cockfighting, which was still legal in some parts of the world during this period, contributed to the popularity of breeding and exhibiting these birds. Today, the Plymouth Rock breed remains a beloved and iconic example of Victorian poultry breeding and a testament to the enduring fascination with the exotic and the beautiful in the natural world.
