EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photograph taken at Windsor Castle in 1896, Princess Beatrice of Battenberg, the fifth daughter of Queen Victoria, is seen enjoying a moment of tranquility with her three children: Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Carisbrooke, Victoria Eugenie, Queen of Spain, and Prince Maurice of Battenberg, and her eldest son, Prince Leopold Mountbatten, who is peeking over his mother's shoulder. The Princess, dressed in a simple yet elegant gown, sits on a wooden bench, engrossed in a book, while her children gather around her, each captivated by their own activities. Princess Beatrice, who was born on April 14, 1857, was known for her intelligence, wit, and independent spirit. She was a beloved member of the British royal family and was particularly close to her mother, Queen Victoria. In this photograph, we see a tender and loving moment between mother and children, as they gather together for a family portrait at Windsor Castle. The eldest child, Alexander, was born in 1863 and was the first grandchild of Queen Victoria. He later became the 1st Marquess of Carisbrooke and served in the British Army. Victoria Eugenie, born in 1887, went on to become Queen of Spain when she married King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1906. Prince Maurice, born in 1867, became the 6th Marquess of Carisbrooke and served in the British Navy. The youngest child, Prince Leopold, was born in 1889 and died tragically at the age of 12 in 1899. This photograph captures a moment in time, showcasing the close bond between Princess Beatrice and her children, as they enjoy a peaceful moment together at Windsor Castle in the late 1890s.
