Drawn and engraved by the renowned English naturalist John Latham in 1822, this image is taken from his comprehensive work, A General History of Birds. The Purple-throated Carib is a small, iridescent hummingbird species native to the Caribbean region. The male is easily identified by its distinctive garnet-red throat, which contrasts strikingly against its green back and wings. The female, on the other hand, has a duller throat, which is greenish-white in color. Hovering gracefully in mid-air, the Purple-throated Carib is a master of agility and speed.
