EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Scaleworms or Segmented Worms," is a captivating illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Carini, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin (1775-1840) is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. This illustration showcases three different species of scaleworms or segmented worms: Eumolpe impatiens, Eumolpe scolopendrina, and Eumolpe longissima. The first worm, Eumolpe impatiens, is depicted with a long, slender body, covered in small, overlapping rings or scales. Its head is distinctly different from its body, with a pair of antennae and two large, tooth-like structures. The second worm, Eumolpe scolopendrina, is shown with a more elongated and curved body, with a noticeable segmentation and a pair of long, whip-like appendages at the rear. The third worm, Eumolpe longissima, is illustrated with a long, cylindrical body, covered in small rings and possessing a pair of antennae and a pair of short, unsegmented appendages. This intricately detailed illustration provides a glimpse into the natural world of marine segmented worms during the 19th century, showcasing the meticulous work of Turpin and his collaborators. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the already impressive engraving, making it a valuable piece of scientific and artistic history.
