Located under the estuary of the River Severn, the tunnel was built between 1873 and 1886 to link South Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. In the first image, we see the present Great Western Railway steam ferry docked on the Monmouthshire bank during low tide. The ferry served as a crucial transportation link before the tunnel was completed. The second photograph captures a diver preparing to descend into the inundated portion of the tunnel on the Monmouthshire side. The diver's task was to rectify the machinery, demonstrating the intricate and dangerous work required to build and maintain the tunnel.
