EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate print depicts the extinct South Island kokako, or Cinereous wattle bird (Callaeas cinerea cinerea), native to New Zealand. The South Island kokako was a unique and distinctive bird, with blue-grey plumage, a distinctive red wattle under its beak, and a haunting, melodic call. This particular print was drawn and engraved by the renowned English naturalist and artist, John Latham, for his publication "A General History of Birds" in 1822. The South Island kokako was once widespread throughout the forests of the South Island of New Zealand, but due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species such as rats and possums, the population declined dramatically. The last known South Island kokako was sighted in 1997, and the species was officially declared extinct in 2007. This beautiful and intricately detailed print serves as a poignant reminder of the South Island kokako's once vibrant presence in the natural world. Latham's meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to accurately recording the natural world make this print an invaluable contribution to the field of ornithology. The South Island kokako may be gone, but its legacy lives on through the preservation of this and other historical records.
