EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Sri Lankan Brown Fish Owl, Ketupa zeylonensis, also known as the Great Ceylonese Eared Owl. The image is based on an illustration by Pieter de Bevere, provided by Governor Joan Gideon Loten of Sri Lanka during the late 18th century. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of the engraving are the work of Peter Brown, as part of his New Illustrations of Zoology series, published by B. White in London in 1776. The Sri Lankan Brown Fish Owl is a unique and fascinating bird endemic to Sri Lanka. With its distinctive ear tufts, large yellow eyes, and brown plumage, it is well-adapted to its wetland habitat. This owl is an excellent swimmer and hunts primarily by wading in shallow water, using its keen senses to locate fish and amphibians. The engraving captures the owl's striking appearance and the serene atmosphere of its natural environment. The intricate details of the feathers, the textures of the water, and the reflections on the surface all contribute to a vivid and immersive representation of this remarkable bird. The New Illustrations of Zoology series was a groundbreaking work in the field of ornithology, showcasing a wide range of species from around the world. This image of the Sri Lankan Brown Fish Owl is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists and naturalists involved in its creation, and remains an important historical record of this beautiful and elusive bird.
