EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the eight esteemed rulers of the Adil Shah Dynasty of Bijapur, located in present-day India. The image includes Sultan Yusuf Adil Shah (1450-1510) seated on the throne, with Ibrahim I and Ali I to his left, and Ibrahim II and Muhammad to his right. The final ruler, Sikandar Adil Shah, who came to power at the tender age of 4, is shown seated far right (1672-1686). The Adil Shah Dynasty was a significant Islamic ruling house that ruled the Bijapur Sultanate from 1490 to 1686. The dynasty is renowned for its architectural, artistic, and cultural achievements, including the construction of the famous Gol Gumbaz mausoleum. The sultans are depicted in grandeur, dressed in richly embroidered robes and adorned with precious jewels. They are shown on horseback, signifying their status as powerful warriors and leaders. Their retinues of soldiers, both infantry and cavalry, are also depicted, carrying weapons such as lances, shields, and swords. This print is a hand-tinted copperplate engraving, copied from an album leaf by Kamal and Chand Muhammad in 1680. It was later reproduced by Corsi after Giulio Ferrario in his "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, 1833. The print provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and history of the Adil Shah Dynasty and the broader context of Indian history during this period. It is important to note that this print is not related to any commercial use or company. Instead, it serves as an important historical and artistic record of a significant dynasty in Indian history.
