EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases two captivating snakes native to Suriname: the Green snake (Malayan green whipsnake, Ahaetulla mycterizans) and the Checkered garter snake (Thamnophis marcianus). The Green snake, also known as the Malayan green whipsnake, is characterized by its slender body and vibrant green coloration, with black and white checkered markings along its sides. The Checkered garter snake, on the other hand, displays a striking contrast of black and white checkered patterns against its creamy white background. This exquisite artwork is a testament to the natural history exploration of the 18th century. It was created by the skilled hands of Johann Friedrich Schmidt, who meticulously engraved the image based on an illustration from nature by Johann Christoph Keller. The engraving is part of the Deliciae Naturae Selectae, or "Select Delights of Nature," published by Georg Wolfgang Knorrs in Nuremberg in 1771. The snakes depicted in this engraving were once part of the Wunderkammer, or Cabinet of Curiosities, owned by Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew in Nuremberg. These collections of natural and artificial rarities were popular during the Age of Enlightenment, reflecting the growing fascination with the natural world and the desire to document and classify its wonders. The Green snake and Checkered garter snake continue to fascinate naturalists and enthusiasts alike, with their intricate patterns and unique characteristics. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the rich natural history of Suriname and the importance of preserving and appreciating the diversity of life on our planet.
