This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, titled "Boys playing at Tilting," offers a fascinating glimpse into the medieval pastime of tilting, a popular form of chivalric training and competition that originated in the 14th century. The image is taken from Strutt's comprehensive work, "Sports and Pastimes of the People of England," published by Chatto and Windus in London in 1876. In the foreground, young boys are seen engaged in a playful version of tilting, using makeshift lances and poles as they charge at each other on horseback. Their joyful expressions and disheveled attire contrast sharply with the more serious scene unfolding in the background, where armored knights on horseback engage in full-contact jousting matches. The knights, clad in intricately designed armor, charge towards each other with lances at the ready, their shields held firmly in place by bucklers. The scene also includes an unusual variation of tilting, with knights tilting on rowboats. This form of tilting required great skill and agility, as the knights maneuvered their boats towards each other, attempting to knock their opponents off balance with their lances.
