This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Arnoldi after an illustration by George Shaw in his seminal work "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801, offers a fascinating glimpse into the life cycle of the Common Toad, Bufo bufo (previously known as Rana bufo). The image captures a female Common Toad in the process of laying her eggs, surrounded by chains of ova or spawn, as well as developing tadpoles and immature toads. George Shaw, a renowned naturalist and illustrator, meticulously documented the natural history of various species in his comprehensive work.
