EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by an unidentified photographer for the Illustrated London News in 1928, captures the traditional crafts of pottery and parchment making in the English villages of Dorset and Havant, Hampshire. In Dorset, a skilled workman shapes a piece of clay on a potter's wheel, his hands deftly guiding the material into a beautiful, functional form. The earthy scent of the clay and the rhythmic sound of the wheel's turning transport us back in time, to a world where the art of pottery has been passed down through generations. Meanwhile, in Havant, a craftsman carefully prepares a sheet of parchment, a process that has been carried out in this village for over a thousand years. The parchment, made from sheepskins, is meticulously cleaned, scraped, and treated with limewater before being stretched and smoothed into a thin, even surface. The resulting product was once a prized material for recording important documents, from religious texts to legal agreements. These images offer a glimpse into the rich traditions of rural England in the late 1920s, where the value of handmade crafts and the connection to the land were deeply cherished. The pottery and parchment industries of Dorset and Havant represent a time when the world moved at a slower pace, and the simple pleasures of creating something beautiful with one's hands were a source of pride and fulfillment.
