EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcoloured ukiyo-e woodblock print by Toyokuni Utagawa, titled "Imayo Sugata" (Modern Forms and Figures) from the Picture Book of the same name published in Tokyo in 1916, we are invited to witness a tranquil moment in the life of the elite samurai class. The scene unfolds in an ornate alcove adorned with coral, scrolls, feathers, and other decorative elements, evoking an air of refinement and sophistication. At the center, a wife of the high-ranking samurai class sits in a serene posture, engrossed in a book. Her elegant attire, featuring a mekake robe and a stylish hat, is reminiscent of the latest fashion trends of the time. Nearby, another woman writes with a pen, her concentration unbroken as she creates beautiful calligraphy. A third woman admires ukiyo-e prints, their vibrant colors and intricate details captivating her senses. A servant woman delivers reams of paper and ink, ready to cater to the artistic needs of her mistresses. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of a dancing girl and a musician, who entertain the women with their lively performances. A blind harpist and a koto player, both clad in traditional Japanese costumes, add to the festive atmosphere. The elite samurai man, depicted in the background, enjoys his pipe and tobacco, seemingly content with the company of his wife and concubines. A girl pours sake into small cups, while a candle illuminates the room, casting a warm, inviting glow. The sea and bream plate on the table remind us of the abundance and richness of their lifestyle. This exquisite print offers a glimpse into the world of the Japanese elite during the early 19th century, showcasing their refined tastes, artistic pursuits, and the importance of education and entertainment in their daily lives.
