This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases four distinct species of fish: the Zingel zingel, or red hind; Epinephelus guttatus, or red hind grouper; Morone saxatilis, or striped bass; and Perca saxatilis, or freshwater perch. The image is a meticulous reproduction of a work by the skilled engraver Jacob Nilson. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811), a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was a prominent figure in the scientific community of his time, earning the moniker "German Buffon" for his extensive contributions to the field of ichthyology.
