Ashtabula, Ohio, USA - Flatiron Park: A Glimpse into the Past This photograph transports us back in time to the picturesque Flatiron Park in Ashtabula, Ohio, USA, during the roaring twenties. The scene is set along Center Street, where the Old Cannon stands proudly, a relic of history that holds a fascinating tale. The Old Cannon, an artillery piece from the War of 1812, is a cherished landmark in Ashtabula. In this photograph, it stands tall against the backdrop of lush greenery and the clear blue sky. However, its history is not just limited to being a beautiful park attraction. In the early 1920s, it played a pivotal role in a local crime story. Billy Whitlas, a local resident, was kidnapped in 1921, and his family received a ransom demand of $10,000. The kidnappers demanded that the ransom be placed in the Old Cannon, which was located in Flatiron Park. For nearly six hours, the cannon held the ransom, adding an element of intrigue and danger to this otherwise peaceful park. Eventually, the police were able to rescue Billy Whitlas, and the kidnappers were apprehended.
