EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is a captivating representation of two vibrant and exotic birds, the Purple-throated Euphonia (Euphonia chlorotica) and the Green-winged Saltator (Saltator similis), taken from the pages of Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology. Published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830, this impressive work was a product of the renowned French naturalist and zoologist, Count Dumont de Sainte-Croix. The illustration itself was the creation of the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845). Pretre began his career as a painter at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate plumage and lifelike expressions of the birds. The engraving was expertly executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The stipple engraving technique used here allowed for a high level of detail and texture, resulting in a truly breathtaking representation of these beautiful birds. The Purple-throated Euphonia, with its striking purple throat and vibrant green plumage, is depicted perched on a branch, while the Green-winged Saltator, with its distinctive green wings and yellow underparts, is shown on the ground below. This exquisite work of art provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago and remains a testament to the skill and artistry of its creators.
