EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic HMS Investigator, Captain Cook's discovery ship, moored at Somerset House on the River Thames in London. Built as a transport and sailing vessel for the Royal Navy in 1811, the HMS Investigator played a significant role in Captain James Cook's third and final voyage of exploration, during which he charted New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia. After Cook's death in 1779, the ship was decommissioned from active service and later converted into a police station in March 1837. The photograph shows the venerable vessel anchored at Somerset House, its once-majestic sails now replaced by the modern trappings of law enforcement. On the fateful day of 19 April 1842, the HMS Investigator sprang a leak and began to sink. Despite the quick actions of the seven police officers on board, who were able to evacuate to safety, the historic ship met her end in the Thames. Despite this tragic end, the HMS Investigator's storied past as a vessel of exploration and later as a police station made it a unique and important part of both maritime and law enforcement history. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the ship's rich past and the many stories it holds within its hull.
