This intriguing photograph captures the eccentric antics of John Mytton, a wealthy Englishman from the early 19th century, as he attempts to drive his carriage over a tollgate in defiance of the toll-keeper. Mytton, known for his reckless and unconventional behavior, is depicted here with a determined expression on his face as he urges his horse forward, the tollgate looming ominously in the foreground. The toll-keeper, dressed in a traditional uniform, looks on in disbelief and annoyance, no doubt wondering how he will collect the toll from this obstinate and wealthy passenger.
