Saint Denis, the First Bishop of Paris, is depicted in this evocative image carrying his own decapitated head. He was eventually arrested and sentenced to death for refusing to renounce his beliefs. According to legend, Denis was beheaded on Montmartre Hill, but as his head was being carried away, it miraculously continued to speak, inspiring his followers to build a church at the site of his execution.
