The Suffragettes, a militant organization fighting for women's suffrage, had been staging protests and demonstrations for several years, but the 1908 election marked a significant moment in their struggle. The Chelmsford constituency was particularly important as it was the seat of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George, who was a known opponent of women's suffrage.
