Tashi Lama and Mr Gould, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Tashi Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, is seen in a solemn meeting with Mr. Gould, a British diplomat, during the Tibet Expedition of 1904. This little-known campaign, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, was launched from India with the support of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, in response to growing concerns over Russian influence and perceived advances toward the border. The Tibet Expedition, as depicted in this fascinating album, reveals new details of a military force that brushed aside Tibetan defenses to capture Lhasa. The images in this album, which have come down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to Colonel Younghusband, offer a unique glimpse into the expedition's various elements: military encampments, monasteries, stunning scenery, and local populations. The significance of this expedition and its impact on Tibetan history is still a subject of debate. While the British gained several concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, the cost-benefit analysis of the endeavor remains a topic of discussion. The photograph of Tashi Lama and Mr. Gould captures a pivotal moment in the expedition's diplomatic efforts, as the British sought to establish a foothold in Tibet and assert their influence in the region. The album's images offer a captivating window into a bygone era, providing valuable insights into the people, places, and events that shaped the political landscape of the early 20th century.
