EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the determination and bravery of a Polish soldier from the Mechanised Cavalry Brigade during World War II. The soldier, a member of the anti-tank corps, is seen here in France in 1940, where the brigade was organized as part of the Polish Army in Exile. Led by General Stanisław Maczek, the brigade was formed primarily from veterans of the 10th Motorized Cavalry Brigade who had managed to escape from German and Soviet-occupied Poland. The soldier in the photograph wears the distinctive helmet and carries a rifle, ready for action. The Mechanised Cavalry Brigade played a significant role in the Battle of France in May 1940, engaging the German forces with great courage and tenacity. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Polish soldiers fought valiantly, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy and buying precious time for the Allied forces to retreat. The Polish Army in Exile was a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Polish people in the face of overwhelming adversity. The soldiers, many of whom had already lost their homes and families to the invading forces, fought not just for their own survival but for the future of their country. This photograph is a poignant reminder of their sacrifices and the bravery of the Polish soldiers who served in the Mechanised Cavalry Brigade during World War II."
