Nihonbashi (Japan Bridge) - Tokyo, Japan
Nihonbashi (literally Japan Bridge), or Nihombashi, a business district of Chuo, Tokyo, Japan which grew up around the bridge of the same name (pictured, which has linked two sides of the Nihonbashi River at this site since the 17th century). In the early 1960s, a vast expressway was built above this bridge, spoiling the situation of the elegant structure. There are now plans to remove this eyesore and for the bridge to once again be the focal point for the area. Date: circa 1907

EDITORS COMMENTS
Nihonbashi Bridge, Tokyo, Japan: A Glimpse into the Past Nihonbashi Bridge, translated as 'Japan Bridge,' is a historic landmark in Tokyo, Japan, located in the Chuo district. This elegant structure, pictured here circa 1907, has graced the Nihonbashi River at this site since the 17th century. The bridge was once the heart of a bustling commercial area, with tramlines crisscrossing the streets and telegraph wires stretching overhead. The tranquil scene depicted in this photograph is a far cry from the reality of the 1960s, when a vast expressway was constructed above the bridge, obscuring its beauty. This intrusion has long been a source of contention among locals and preservationists, who yearn for the bridge to once again be the focal point of the area. The bridge's history dates back to 1603 when it was first built by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Period. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous reconstructions, but its significance as a symbol of Japan's rich cultural heritage remains unchanged. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time, to an era when Nihonbashi Bridge was the beating heart of Tokyo's commercial district. Let us hope that, in the not-too-distant future, this iconic bridge will once again regain its former glory and continue to captivate visitors from around the world.
