EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment at the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games, as Tom Burke of the United States crosses the finish line to win the inaugural 100-meter race at the 1896 Athens Olympics. Dressed in red shorts and a sleeveless shirt, Burke outpaced his competitors with a time of 11.0 seconds, setting the tone for the international athletic competition that would come to define the modern era of sports. The first modern Olympic Games, held from April 6 to April 15, 1896, in Athens, Greece, marked a significant milestone in the history of sports. Organized by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, the Games aimed to promote international goodwill and unity through athletic competition. With just 281 participants from 13 nations, the 1896 Olympics featured 43 events in nine different sports, including athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, and shooting. Burke's victory in the 100-meter race was one of several American triumphs during the Games. Other notable American victories included Robert Garrett's win in the marathon and Richard Sheldon's victory in the heavyweight weightlifting competition. The 1896 Olympics set the stage for the establishment of the International Olympic Committee and the subsequent revival of the Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris. This photograph, taken at the start of the 100-meter race, is a testament to the rich history of the Olympics and the enduring spirit of athletic competition that continues to inspire and unite people from all corners of the world.
