EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Auster J.5F Aiglet trainer aircraft, registration number G-AMTA (msn 2780), in the 1960s. Built by Auster Aircraft Ltd. in 1952, this particular Auster J.5F model was a variant of the Auster J.5 Champion, which was designed primarily for pilot training. The Auster J.5F was a versatile and popular aircraft, known for its robust design and ease of handling. It featured a metal fuselage and wings, and was powered by a 145 horsepower de Havilland Gipsy Queen IV engine, which provided a cruising speed of around 110 miles per hour. In this image, we see the G-AMTA sitting on the grassy runway, with its distinctive Auster tailfin and wingspan of just over 35 feet. The pilot, dressed in flying gear, is visible in the cockpit, ready for takeoff. The aircraft's wings are folded, indicating that it is about to be taxied to the runway for flight. The 1960s was an era of significant growth for general aviation, and the Auster J.5F was a popular choice for flying schools and private pilots. With its affordability, reliability, and ease of use, it provided an excellent platform for training the next generation of pilots. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when flying was a more romantic and adventurous pursuit. The Auster J.5F, with its timeless design and enduring appeal, continues to be a cherished symbol of aviation history.
