EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1953 SBAC Farnborough Airshow, the Blackburn Universal Freighter Mk. 2, registration G-AMVW (msn 1001), also known as the Blackburn Beverley prototype WZ889, graces the runway. This historic aircraft, operated by Blackburn Aircraft, made its first flight on 14th June 1953. The Blackburn Universal was a versatile, twin-engine transport aircraft, designed to meet the Royal Air Force's requirement for a medium-lift, short-range transport aircraft. The sleek and modern design of the Universal Freighter Mk. 2 is evident in this image, with its distinctive wingtip shape and twin engines positioned low on the wings. The aircraft's versatility was demonstrated by its ability to carry a range of payloads, including passengers, freight, and even paratroops. Unfortunately, the Blackburn Universal Freighter Mk. 2, G-AMVW, did not have a long career with Blackburn Aircraft. It was broken up for spares at Brough in 1958. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the innovation and progress of aviation technology during the 1950s. The Blackburn Universal Freighter Mk. 2, with its sleek design and versatile capabilities, remains an intriguing piece of aeronautical history.
