EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Heston Type 1 Phoenix G-AESV, a historic aircraft that played a significant role in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. Owned by Standard Telephonics and housed at Brooklands, this Phoenix was initially impressed into the RAF as X2891 for No. 24 Squadron at the Aeroplane & Armament Experimental Establishment (AEE) in Boscombe Down for blind approach trials in December 1941. Following these trials, the aircraft was transferred to Scottish Aviation Ltd. at Prestwick in 1942 and then to the Air Fighting Development Unit at RAF Wittering in 1943. Despite the rigors of war, the Heston Type 1 Phoenix G-AESV survived and was re-registered as G-AESV. It continued to fly regularly until April 1952, when it unfortunately crashed in the French Alps. This image, taken in 1937, captures the sleek and elegant design of this aircraft, which was a testament to the innovative engineering of its time. The Heston Type 1 Phoenix G-AESV remains an important piece of aviation history, having contributed to the RAF's efforts during the war and leaving a lasting legacy in the annals of aviation.
