Vickers Warwick GR. V

A Vickers Type 474 Warwick GR.V (possibly PN697 just prior to or after delivery to the A&AEE at Boscombe Down) The GR.V was the last gasp of the Warwick and the only mark not to have yaw instability or engine development problems, entering service shortly before the end of the war with most being scrapped very quickly after VJ day. A retractable Leigh Light was carried in the space left by removal of the mid-upper turret, but extending through the floor

EDITORS COMMENTS
Vickers Warwick GR.V: The Swan Song of a War Hero This photograph showcases the Vickers Type 474 Warwick GR.V, a British twin-engine medium bomber that marked the final chapter in the long and storied history of the Vickers Warwick series. The GR.V, specifically aircraft PN697, is depicted here either before or after its delivery to the Royal Air Force's Aeronautical and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE) at Boscombe Down. The Warwick GR.V was a significant departure from its predecessors, as it was the only mark in the series that did not suffer from the infamous yaw instability or engine development issues that plagued earlier versions. This aircraft entered service just before the end of World War II, with most of its brethren being scrapped shortly after VJ Day. In this image, the GR.V's mid-upper turret has been removed, making way for a retractable Leigh Light. This innovative adaptation allowed the aircraft to maintain its offensive capabilities while also providing improved illumination for nighttime operations. The light extended through the floor, offering enhanced visibility for the crew during low-level flights or bombing runs. The Warwick GR.V represented a fitting end to the Warwick legacy. Its service life may have been brief, but its contributions to the Royal Air Force during the final stages of the war were invaluable. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Warwick's rich history and the indomitable spirit of innovation that drove its development. Image Courtesy of Mary Evans Prints Online.
