EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, we see Bert Bissell MBE, a mountain climber and peace campaigner, standing proudly atop Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest mountain, on August 15, 1945, VJ Day. Surrounded by members of the Dudley Bible Class, Bissell had led an extraordinary pilgrimage from their English town to the summit, carrying a peace message to be enshrined in a cairn. Bissell, born in 1902, was a man of unwavering conviction. His peaceful intentions were a stark contrast to the tumultuous times of post-World War II. With the ashes of conflict still lingering, Bissell's message of peace resonated deeply with those who made the arduous journey with him. The group's determination and perseverance were rewarded with a breathtaking view from the summit, where they constructed the Peace Cairn, a symbol of hope and unity. Throughout his life, Bissell continued to champion peace and climbed mountains around the world to spread his message. His legacy extended beyond the physical realm as well, with a peace message being taken to the moon during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. The annual pilgrimage from Dudley to Fort William, the base of Ben Nevis, was repeated for over five decades, inspiring generations to follow in Bissell's footsteps and carry on his mission. Despite the passage of time and the occasional controversy surrounding his methods, Bert Bissell MBE remains an enduring symbol of peace and determination. This photograph captures a moment of triumph and unity, a testament to the power of belief and the indomitable human spirit.
