EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illustration showcases Polygala amara, also known as dwarf milkwort, a charming and diminutive flowering plant belonging to the Polygalaceae family. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration is taken from the esteemed Flora Monacensis, a comprehensive work on the flora of the Monaco region, authored by the renowned botanist Franz von Paula Schrank (1747-1835). The dwarf milkwort is an eudicot, a type of flowering plant that is characterized by having two embryonic seed leaves (cotyledons) and belonging to the Rosid clade of the Rosids, which is the largest clade of the Rosids and the largest clade of angiosperms. This plant is a member of the Fabales order and the Fabidae family, which includes a diverse range of plants such as legumes and pea family members. Polygala amara is a low-growing perennial herb, typically reaching only a few centimeters in height. Its tiny, bell-shaped, pink or purple flowers bloom in clusters, attracting various pollinators and adding a delightful touch to meadows and woodlands. The plant's leaves are simple, ovate, and sessile, with a smooth surface and a slightly waxy appearance. This illustration, created in 1811, provides a fascinating glimpse into the rich botanical knowledge of the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is a testament to the meticulous work of Franz von Paula Schrank and the importance of historical records in documenting the natural world.
