EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein, the second son of Prince and Princess Christian (Princess Helena) and grandson of Queen Victoria, is seen enjoying a leisurely game of golf at the prestigious Sunningdale Golf Club in England. The year is 1910, and despite being excused military service against the British during World War I due to his German heritage, Albert chose to serve on the staff of the Governor of Berlin instead. The tranquil setting of the golf course provides a stark contrast to the political tensions brewing in Europe at the time. Prince Albert, dressed in the traditional golfing attire of the early 20th century, is intently focused on his putt, his expression a perfect blend of determination and concentration. The lush green of the putting green stretches out before him, dotted with the white balls of other golfers, while the sun casts dappled shadows across the landscape. Sunningdale Golf Club, founded in 1891, was one of the most esteemed golfing institutions in the country, and it was an honor for Albert to serve as its captain. The image of the prince on the links, surrounded by the natural beauty of the course, is a testament to his love of sport and his commitment to maintaining his connection to his British heritage. Prince Albert's decision to join the Prussian Army instead of serving with the British during the war was a controversial one, and his golfing pursuits at Sunningdale may have been a way for him to escape the political scrutiny that came with his decision. Regardless, this photograph captures a moment of respite and relaxation for a member of the royal family, showcasing his passion for golf and his dedication to the sporting traditions of his British upbringing.
