EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor, was created by Sir John Lavery in 1914. The image is a sketch for a larger family group painting that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1913. The Prince of Wales, born in 1894, was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. At the time this portrait was created, he was the heir apparent to the British throne. Lavery's skillful brushstrokes capture the young prince's regal bearing and charisma, making for a striking and historically significant image. The Prince's fashionable attire, with its crisp collar and neatly tied bow tie, adds to the formal and elegant feel of the portrait. His piercing gaze and confident posture exude a sense of authority and leadership, reflecting the expectations placed upon him as the future monarch. The Prince's later abdication in 1936, following his decision to marry Wallis Simpson, a divorced American socialite, shocked the world and marked a turning point in British monarchy. However, this portrait, created just a few years before the scandal, offers a glimpse into the Prince's regal image and the anticipation surrounding his future reign. Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) was a renowned Irish painter, known for his portraits and landscapes. He was a popular choice for depicting members of the British royal family, and this portrait of The Prince of Wales is a testament to his artistic talent and the historical significance of the subject.
