EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Princess Cecilie of Greece, born in 1911 as the third child of Prince and Princess Andrew of Greece (Alice of Battenberg), is captured in her regal beauty. Cecilie was the elder sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, making her a beloved member of the extended royal family. In 1931, she married Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse & by Rhine, and the couple shared a happy marriage. The image, taken around 1935, showcases Princess Cecilie's grace and poise, with her striking features and refined attire. Her expressive eyes convey a sense of warmth and charm, making this portrait a captivating glimpse into the life of this remarkable woman. Tragically, Princess Cecilie's life was cut short when she, her husband, her mother-in-law, her elder children, and her unborn child were killed in a plane crash on their way to the wedding of Georg Donatus' brother, Ludwig. The devastating accident occurred in Ostend in 1937, leaving the royal family and the world in mourning. This poignant photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the short but significant life of Princess Cecilie, who left an indelible mark on the history of both Greece and Germany as the sister of a future monarch and the beloved wife of a German prince.
