EDITORS COMMENTS
Protonotaria citrea, or the Prothonotary Warbler, is depicted in this stunning hand-coloured aquatint plate from John James Audubon's "Birds of America." This exquisite work of art is Plate 3 from the original double elephant folio edition, produced between 1827 and 1830. The plate was engraved by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Prothonotary Warbler is a small, vibrant bird belonging to the Passeridae family, order Passeriformes, and class Sauropsida. This golden-hued bird is characterized by its distinctive yellow plumage, with a bright yellow belly and chest, and a black mask extending from its eyes to the nape of its neck. The male and female Prothonotary Warblers are similar in appearance, with the female having a slightly less vibrant coloration. This Prothonotary Warbler is shown perched gracefully on a cane, surrounded by lush green vegetation and vines, likely in a swampy environment. The bird's golden feathers gleam in the sunlight, while its tail is cocked, displaying its bright yellow coloration. The Prothonotary Warbler is a passerine bird, meaning it belongs to the order of perching birds, and is known for its melodic song. The Prothonotary Warbler is native to North America and is often found in wetland habitats, particularly in the southeastern United States. This bird is an important indicator species for the health of wetland ecosystems, and its population has declined in recent decades due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Audubon's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of the Prothonotary Warbler in this plate make it a true masterpiece of ornithological art. The hand-colouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing the bird to life and showcasing its beauty in a way that words alone cannot convey.
