EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Queen Maud of Norway, the beloved wife of King Haakon VII, in a moment of quiet reflection. Born Princess Maud of Wales in 1869, she was the eldest daughter of King Edward VII of England and Queen Alexandra. Raised in the heart of the British monarchy, Maud's destiny was to become the Queen Consort of Norway. In 1905, following Norway's secession from Sweden, Maud's father arranged for her to marry Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to the Norwegian throne. The union was a symbol of the close ties between Norway and Great Britain, and Maud's popularity in her new homeland was immediate. This photograph, taken in 1938, captures Queen Maud in her later years. With her regal bearing and serene expression, she embodies the grace and dignity of a monarch. Her connection to both the British and Norwegian royal families, as well as her role as a peacemaker during World War II, cemented her place in history. Maud's life was marked by tragedy as well as triumph. She lost her first husband, Crown Prince Haakon, in a boating accident in 1906, and later, her only son, Crown Prince Olav, was forced to flee Norway during the German occupation in World War II. Despite these challenges, Maud remained a steadfast and beloved figure, and her legacy continues to inspire the people of Norway to this day. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Queen Maud's enduring legacy as a symbol of unity, resilience, and grace in the face of adversity. Taken in the final years of her life, it captures the essence of a woman who dedicated herself to her country and her family, leaving a lasting impact on the history of Norway and the world.
