EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Ras Taffari, the Regent of Ethiopia, stands proudly on the steps of his palace in Addis Ababa, assuming the title of Negus, or King, on November 2, 1928. Surrounded by a sea of Ethiopian dignitaries, soldiers, and citizens, Ras Taffari basks in the adulation of his people as they applaud and cheer in celebration of this momentous occasion. The Regency Council had chosen Ras Taffari, a highly respected military leader and statesman, to lead Ethiopia following the death of Emperor Yohannes IV in 1913. Over the ensuing years, Ras Taffari skillfully navigated the complex political landscape of Ethiopia and Africa, securing the loyalty of his people and strengthening Ethiopia's position on the world stage. The title of Negus was a significant milestone in Ras Taffari's career, marking his transition from regent to monarch. This event was a testament to his leadership abilities and the support he had earned from the Ethiopian people. The photograph captures a pivotal moment in Ethiopian history, as the country moved towards modernization and greater international recognition. Ras Taffari's reign as Negus would later be known as the "Era of the Last Kings," as he would go on to rule Ethiopia until his own death in 1930. This period saw significant progress in areas such as education, infrastructure development, and diplomacy. The legacy of Ras Taffari, who later became known as Emperor Haile Selassie I, would endure long after his death, shaping the course of Ethiopian history for generations to come. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Ethiopia, a country that has played a vital role in African history and continues to inspire and captivate the world. The image of Ras Taffari, applauded by his people, stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of unity in the face of adversity.
