EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph prints the historic moment of the Le Suffren balloon's ascent from the garden of the orphanage in Nantes, France, on 14th June 1784. The Le Suffren balloon, named after the French naval hero, Admiral François Joseph Paul de Grasse, Comte de Grasse, was one of the most significant achievements in the early days of ballooning. The image showcases the balloon in its final stages of preparation, with the large, woven basket or gondola suspended beneath the expansive, envelope filled with hot air. The intricate system of ropes and pulleys can be seen at the base of the gondola, used to raise and fill the balloon with hot air. The process involved heating the air inside the envelope by burning a large fire beneath it, causing the air to expand and lift the balloon. The scene is set against a backdrop of lush greenery and a clear, blue sky, with onlookers gathered around the edge of the garden, waving and cheering in excitement. The Le Suffren balloon represented a new form of transportation and a marvel of human ingenuity, paving the way for further advancements in aviation and exploration. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the early days of ballooning and the sense of wonder and adventure that came with it. The Le Suffren balloon's ascent from the garden of the orphanage in Nantes remains an iconic moment in the history of flight and a testament to the human spirit of discovery.
