EDITORS COMMENTS
Bluebird on Baloma Mud Flats: A Daring Voyage of Discovery in 1931 This evocative photograph captures the moment when Miss Delphine Reynolds and her fearless pilot, W.G. Pudney, came to a halt on the Baloma Mud Flats in West Africa, marking the end of their daring survey flight in the Blackburn Bluebird IV, registration number G-ABGF. Their journey began on 1 March 1931, as they took off from Hanworth Aerodrome in England, embarking on an ambitious mission to traverse the West African coast, via Tangier, Morocco, to Bathurst, Gambia. The Bluebird IV, a sturdy and innovative aircraft designed by Blackburn Aircraft, was equipped with a metal airframe, which proved to be both a blessing and a curse on this arduous journey. As they ventured deeper into Africa, the harsh conditions took their toll on the Bluebird IV. After two and a half months in Sierra Leone, the metal airframe had corroded beyond repair. Undeterred, Miss Reynolds and Mr. Pudney made their way to the Baloma Mud Flats, where they awaited the arrival of Short floats to enable them to continue their journey. This photograph is a testament to the indomitable spirit of aviation pioneers, who braved the unknown and pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the early days of air travel. The Bluebird IV, with its weathered exterior and determined pilots, stands as a symbol of the courage and resilience required to explore new frontiers and expand our understanding of the world.
