River Gambia (Reflections): A Moment of Respite in a Historic Flight This evocative photograph captures the serene reflection of the River Gambia as Miss Delphine Reynolds and her pilot, W.G. Pudney, pause in their historic flight over West Africa in March 1931. Departing from Hanworth in England on the 1st of that month, they flew aboard the Blackburn Bluebird IV, registration number G-ABGF, embarking on a daring survey mission down the coast of Africa, ultimately bound for Bathurst, the capital of the Gambia. Their journey began with the takeoff from Hanworth, and after two and a half months in Sierra Leone, the metal airframe of the Blackburn Bluebird IV had unfortunately corroded beyond repair. Despite this setback, the intrepid duo had covered significant ground, using Short floats to continue their mission in the Gambia. As they flew over the tranquil waters of the River Gambia, the reflection of the landscape below mirrored the clear blue sky above.
