EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of Royal ceremonial traditions unfolding in the open air at Buckingham Palace during the momentous year of 1918. The scene in the quadrangle showcases an open-air investiture by King George V, a departure from the usual enclosed ceremonies. The first two recipients of decorations in this ceremony were Sergeant Mountain of the West Yorkshires and Private T. Young of the Durhams, who were awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the face of the enemy. The final recipient was Mrs. Flowerdew, the mother of the late Lieutenant Gordon Flowerdew of the Canadian Cavalry, who received the Victoria Cross on her son's behalf. The photograph also documents the Royal Silver Wedding Procession of over 3,000 Women War-workers, who made their way to Buckingham Palace to mark the 25th wedding anniversary of King George V and Queen Mary. Following the King's address, various sections of the women's services marched past, including V.A.D.s (Voluntary Aid Detachments), Women's Legion, W.A.A.C.s (Women's Auxiliary Army Corps), Wrens (Women's Royal Naval Service), Land Girls, Foresters, National Land Service Corps girls, and Munitioners, among others. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the historical events of 1918, a pivotal year in both the Royal and military history of the United Kingdom.
