EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the therapeutic landscape of the Royal Victoria Hospital Farm Colony in Polton, Midlothian, Scotland, circa 1910. The Farm Colony, an integral part of the Edinburgh Scheme for combating tuberculosis, was founded in 1910 in conjunction with the Royal Victoria Hospital (established in 1894) and the Dispensary. Together, these institutions aimed to provide a comprehensive approach to treating tuberculosis (TB), a debilitating ailment also known as consumption. In this image, patients are seen working the land and planting seed potatoes, a common therapy used in the open-air treatment of TB. The Farm Colony offered a unique environment where patients could benefit from the restorative effects of fresh air, sunlight, and the simple yet therapeutic activity of farming. The scene exudes a sense of community and hope, as individuals come together to work towards their recovery. The Royal Victoria Hospital, Dispensary, and Farm Colony were gifted to the City of Edinburgh in 1914, leading to the establishment of the Royal Victoria Tuberculosis Trust. These institutions later came under the management of the Royal Victoria and Associated Hospitals NHS Trust in 1948 and the North Lothian District of Lothian Health Board in 1974. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history of medical treatment and the resilience of those who sought healing during a time when tuberculosis was a significant public health concern.
