EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the intensity and intrigue of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes, as portrayed by Reginald Cooper in the 1893 production of "The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk." In this particular scene, Dr. Joseph Bell, played by H.B. Irving, and Inspector Lestrade, portrayed by George Marlow, look on as Dr. Roylott Pycroft, played by Henry A. Siddons, passionately shakes his clenched fists in the air. The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk is one of the 13 short stories in Doyle's second collection of Sherlock Holmes tales, published in 1893. In this thrilling adventure, Holmes and Watson are tasked with solving the mysterious disappearance of a clerk, who was last seen leaving his employer's office with a large sum of money. The trail leads the duo to a series of intriguing clues, including a cryptic note and a seemingly unrelated suicide. The historical context of this photograph is significant, as it provides a glimpse into the early days of Sherlock Holmes' literary fame. The character, who first appeared in print in A Study in Scarlet in 1887, quickly captured the imagination of the public and became a cultural phenomenon. This production, which was staged at the Lyceum Theatre in London, was one of several adaptations of the stories that helped to solidify Holmes' place in popular culture. The image of Pycroft's impassioned outburst is a testament to the drama and suspense that permeated these early adaptations of Doyle's stories. The clenched fists and raised hands convey a sense of desperation and frustration, as the character struggles to come to terms with the truth about the missing clerk. Overall, this photograph is a fascinating window into the history of Sherlock Holmes and the enduring appeal of his adventures.
