Ships trapped in Suez Canal, Six-Day War
Fifteen ships trapped in the Suez Canal as a result of the Six-Day War (5-10 June 1967) between Israel and Egypt. Although the war was short, the Canal was blocked at both ends and the ships were trapped in the Great Bitter Lake section between 1967 and 1975. The ships were nicknamed the Yellow Fleet because of the desert sand which covered them as time went on. Crew members of different nationalities got together to provide mutual support, organising social events, sporting competitions, film screenings, church services, etc. Seen here is a merchant ship, the Scottish Star (Blue Star Line). Date: 1970s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the geopolitical turmoil of the Six-Day War (5-10 June 1967) between Israel and Egypt, fifteen ships found themselves trapped in the Suez Canal at the Great Bitter Lake section. The war, though brief, resulted in the blocking of the canal at both ends, leaving these vessels stranded for nearly a decade. The ships, now infamously known as the 'Yellow Fleet,' were gradually covered in desert sand as time passed. Despite the challenging circumstances, the crews of various nationalities came together, forming a tight-knit community. They organized social events, sporting competitions, film screenings, and even church services to keep morale high. The photograph showcases a merchant ship, the Scottish Star, which was part of the Blue Star Line, among the stranded vessels. The 1970s decade brought a unique camaraderie to the trapped ships, as the crews adapted to their unforeseen circumstances. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity displayed by these men during a time of global tension. The Suez Canal, once a vital artery for international trade, stood still as these ships waited patiently for the waters to reopen.
