EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic events of the Siege of Londonderry, a pivotal moment in Irish and British history. Dating back to April 1689, the siege marked the successful defence of the city by Protestant forces against the advancing army of King James II of England and Ireland. The city of Londonderry, located in present-day Northern Ireland, was a strategic stronghold during the tumultuous period known as the Glorious Revolution. With the city under siege, its Protestant inhabitants bravely held out against the larger and better-equipped forces of King James II, who sought to reclaim the city for Catholicism. The siege lasted for over 100 days, from July to September, with the defenders relying on scant resources and the natural defenses of the city, including the walls and the nearby Foyle and Faughan rivers. The image depicts the determination and resolve of the Protestant defenders, who held their ground against overwhelming odds. The successful defence of Londonderry was a turning point in the Glorious Revolution, and the city became a symbol of Protestant resistance against Catholic rule. The events of the siege are still commemorated annually in Northern Ireland and are an important part of the region's rich historical heritage. This popular image, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience of those who defended Londonderry during the Siege of 1689.
