This evocative print depicts the pivotal moment in the Siege of Sluis, which took place on 12 June 1586. Sluis, a strategically important port town located in the Spanish Netherlands, was a key objective for the Spanish forces under the command of Don Juan of Austria. The town's capture would give the Spanish control over the Scheldt River, a vital waterway for trade and military supply lines. The Dutch, determined to assert their independence, were led by Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. The siege was a brutal and protracted battle, with both sides suffering heavy losses. The Spanish, with their superior numbers and artillery, eventually breached the Dutch defenses and gained entry to the town. Despite their defeat, the Dutch did not give up their struggle for independence. They continued to resist Spanish rule, and the Siege of Sluis marked the beginning of a long and arduous campaign for Dutch freedom. The town remained in Spanish hands until 1604, when it was finally recaptured by the Dutch under the leadership of Archduke Albert and Isabella.
