This image of the bird, with its distinctive blue belly and brown-headed cap, was produced during the 18th century and remains an invaluable contribution to the scientific record of North American avifauna. The Brown-headed Nuthatch, a member of the family Sittidae, is a small, agile bird with a distinctive posture and behavior. It is often found in wooded habitats, particularly those dominated by oak trees (Fagaceae) and other angiosperms of the order Fagales.
